The Departments of Architectural Graphic Expression of the Spanish universities have felt, since the 1980s, the need of media to disseminate the results of their research and their teaching experiences. With this aim, the first Spanish meeting on this field was held in 1984 in La Coruña. Taking into account the positive response to this initiative, a Congress was convened in Seville in 1986. From this year on, the congress has been held each two years and the venue has rotated among the different Spanish Schools of Architecture. This makes the congress the scientific conference in architecture with a longer and more solid trajectory in Spain.

Since the third instance of the congress, which took place in 1990 in Valencia, the conference has had an international scope, shown by the presence of many participants and members of the Scientific Committee from various European and Latin American countries, as well as the close collaboration with the Unione Italiana Disegno. In 2012, the University of Valladolid decided to hold the congress in Porto, with the collaboration of Universidade Lusíada Porto; this has greatly strengthened the collaboration with Portuguese colleagues. Starting with the congress held in Alcalá de Henares in 2016, another step forward in this direction has been the publication of the full-text proceedings in English by the Springer Nature publishing group, in the Springer Series in Design and Innovation.

In the congress held in Valencia in 1990, the Departments of Architectural Graphical Expression agreed to launch Revista EGA Expresión Gráfica Arquitectónica, a journal published by Universidad Politécnica de Valencia, which has also achieved international visibility, shown by its coverage in the Arts and Humanities Index, Avery Index to Architectural Publications, Scopus, and other databases, as well as the inclusion on the lists of scientific publications of ANVUR (Agenzia Nazionale di Valutazione del Sistema Universitario e della Ricerca) as a class A journal.
